50 Days Post Helene

We imagine that you have all seen plenty of pictures of the physical damage wrought by Helene. Our shop was spared the wrath of flood waters, but the invisible damage she brought to our town and local ecosystem hit our business hard. We lost about $10k worth of slabs that were stored in Swannanoa. The building they were in no longer exists. Orders were already way down as we approached the election. Then, the news about what Helene did here completely paralyzed our market, and inquiries for new orders stopped altogether.

Fifty days later, we are starting to see a shift. The city is getting cleaned up and looking better daily.

Even with Helene’s impact still looming, we see signs of normalcy. We’ve been looking for things to celebrate and finding them. Like having the internet and a working phone at the shop as of yesterday morning! Inquiries for furniture are starting to trickle in, and we have running water at home, which is muddy and non-drinkable but very welcome as it is. The water at the shop is potable, so it’s easy to fill jugs and bring them home. Parts of the River Arts District are opening for business, and some closed roads are reopening. The new normal is showing up, and we will shape it as well as we can.

During the storm, the humidity in the shop got pretty high from 100’s of gallons of rain water seeping in from the back wall. This brought the moisture content in our lumber too high to work with. We ran a big dehumidifier and cycled the HVAC from heat at night to draw the moisture out, then to AC during the day to dry the air. That worked well.

We have wood we can now work with, and we’re able to assemble and ship some Sonus chairs and tables that were started before the storm.

Sonus Guitar chair and Sonus Tables by Brian Boggs

On Thursday, we delivered the first piece made entirely at the new shop: a sculpture pedestal for a client in Winston-Salem. The client loved it and ordered two more.

Grovewood, the local gallery we show our work in, just reopened, but with visitors eschewing Asheville, its hallways are quiet. To help us out, Grovewood has offered to let us sell the inventory we have on consignment there without having to pay them a commission. If we can do that and orders return to normal, we’ll be well-positioned for 2025.

We are extremely grateful for all of your phone calls and emails expressing concern and asking how you can help, and we appreciate the offer. We decided against a GoFundMe campaign that could compete with similar efforts by those who lost everything. We have opted instead to sell the gallery inventory we have access to now; using our work to give us a leg up.

So, please take a look at what we have ready to ship before the holidays. If you have been considering purchasing Boggs piece, here is a unique opportunity for a quick turnaround. If you don’t see anything there you can fit into your life; we will gladly take orders for tables, desks, and chairs we can make to your specifications. Please pass this on to any friends who might have seen our work at your home.

Among the inventory, we have a gorgeous live-edge walnut Timber Frame table 8’ long x 44″ wide (seats 8). We also have a sweet 54” (seats 6) round crescent table in curly cherry with a black base. Two side chairs are made for that table, and we could finish that set early in 2025. We have a walnut rocker with an ambrosia seat, the perfect Holiday gift and a walnut armchair that would be an excellent desk or reading chair. To browse our inventory, click the button below. We greatly appreciate your support and look forward to working with you again.

Best regards,
Brian and Melanie
