"We love our Lily stools! We had been looking for bar stools for our new house when we came upon Brian Boggs Chairmakers. Brian and Melanie were so wonderful to work with, it was like working with friends. They listened to what we wanted, gave us some great advice, showed us around the workshop and kept us updated on the progress of the stools via email. The stools are truly pieces of art and so comfortable to sit on. We enjoy them everyday and I love seeing them in my kitchen every morning when I wake up!"

"After completing a two year conversion of our house from a simple Cape Cod to an arts and crafts bungalow, we wanted to treat ourselves to something really special. While driving by Brian’s old workshop, we noticed the Sunniva Swing outside and it impressed us so much, we turned around, parked, and were pleasantly greeted by Brian and Melanie. You could see the passion they have immediately. There is something about Brian’s chairs that just fit so right. I never thought that a solid wood chair could be more comfortable than most upholstered chairs. We decided on the Lily Bar Stools in butternut and walnut, and could not be more happy with them. In fact, I feel honored to have them every time I sit in them. And it is always fun to have a new guest first ooh and ahh about their looks and see their face when they feel how comfortable they are to sit in. These are truly functional art."

"We love our barstools. When we visited you and Brian in Asheville at your workshop, we asked for stools that would be comfortable and truly stand-out and you and your team superceded that objective. My barstools are functional “works of art” that attract attention as soon as guests enter the room. The first conversations are always to tell the story not only of how we found “Brian Boggs Chairmakers” but also the woods in the stools and the process used to make the stools. Most of our guests have never heard of “ebonizing”, so this is a different language for them. It is also helpful to keep our photo album close to show the chairs being made and the photos of you, Brian and Nicolas working on the chairs. It is only after we discuss the chairs that we can pass to the hors d’oeuvres."

Sonus Guitar Chair Testimonials

"It’s amazing in every way! It has improved my posture, and extended the amount of time I can sit and play guitar everyday. It couldn’t be more comfortable, and my 3 year old daughter loves sitting in it so much she as referred to it as ‘her guitar chair’. I dont even like sitting in any other chair when I am at home when I am playing guitar or just watching TV. Last but certainly not least it is a beautiful piece of furniture that visitors ask about constantly. Thanks so much for the time and care you put into this, and it has changed my life and made guitar playing even more enjoyable. I could not be happier with this purchase."

Sonus Guitar Chair
"I wanted a chair to match the beauty of my new Laurie Williams Kauri guitar plus a chair that was comfortable to sit in. There was nothing that I could find in New Zealand but an online search revealed the Sonus Chair from North Carolina. Melanie and Brian have been great to work with. Brian’s pride in his work is very evident and the finished product which arrived a few months ago has certainly met my high expectations. An extremely comfortable chair that aesthetically sits well at home – I love the craftsmanship. Thanks Brian and thanks to Melanie for the excellent communication along the journey."
John Barrett
Sonus Guitar Chair
"I’m really enjoying my chair. Not only is it gorgeous – a piece of wonderful sculpture in my music room – but it is so comfortable that I can forget about it while I’m playing or practicing. A fitting accompaniment to my guitars. Two of my guitars were made by the late Lance McCollum, who described his creations as “functional sculpture.” This clearly is an appropriate term for Brian’s work as well. Thanks again."
Ron Greene
Sonus Guitar Chair
"The Sonus Musician’s Chair was well worth the investment. I am able to play my guitars for hours with no discomfort. The problems I was having with tightness in my back and shoulder have disappeared. The chair has corrected my former unhealthy “slouching” guitar posture by helping me sit up straight. At the same it is also improving my playing technique. I would highly recommend the chair to any guitar player. It is also a beautiful work of art!"

Sonus Guitar Chair
"I love the Sonus Musician’s Chair! I play guitar and violin. The chair encourages and supports proper posture for long practice sessions on both instruments. Of course, you still need to get up and move around to keep blood flowing, but returning to the chair is always a pleasure. And it is a beautiful work of art that adds class to my studio."
Ken Kallenbach
Sonus Guitar Chair
"I received my figured maple/cherry legs chair in April after reading many glowing testimonials. I have played for many years, but felt that lately my playing time had decreased as I always had to quit due to lower back stiffness. Stools never did work for me as they have no back and are often too high. Most chairs seemed to be totally inappropriate because they did not match the length of my leg from the knee to the floor and were poorly angled in the seat. Upon sitting in this fine piece of workmanship (gorgeous!) I found, like others, my posture was much better, the small of the back was properly supported, and of course with a custom leg length, the height was perfect. The thick maple with body shaped contours is extremely comfortable, and I find that I can play for hours without the discomfort I previously dreaded. This is a fine piece of furniture, admired by both guitarists and others, and is always on display in the living room. I couldn’t recommend it more… not cheap, but definitely worth it."

Sonus Guitar Chair
"Spent some time playing guitar yesterday with my new Sonus chair and I have to say, I have NEVER been more comfortable while playing! No more sore back, crossed legs and a yoga block under one foot for me! Not to mention what a beautiful piece of art that Brian has created especially for me! My brother and sister in law are art lovers and appreciate fine contemporary furniture and they are in love with the style and materials of this gorgeous chair…I only wish I was going to be there to meet you both in person! Thank you so much…good things come to those who wait!!!!"

"She’s quite a work of art and an absolute joy to play in. Sent along a few pics of the musical family with their new sibling. Thanks again for the beautiful addition to the home."

Sonus Guitar Chair
"The guitar chair is superb. I got a chance to use it for a jam session last night. It is extraordinarily comfortable to play guitar in. I also found the chair puts me in a posture of engagement, helping me focus on the music. I’m appreciating all the fine and beautiful construction details. It’s a brilliant design. I enjoyed sitting in it while my friends and I were just hanging out too."

"Just wanted to tell you again how much I love my guitar chair. What a fantastic work of art! Congratulations! I had high hopes and the chair has exceeded my expectations in every way. It is unique in that it is not only a great chair for sitting and practicing but my wife also loves it and totally accepts the chair as a permanent part of our living room furniture. In fact, our most beautiful chair. I began my journey in search of the right chair when I received a very special, custom, handmade, acoustic guitar from a friend, Barry Daniels, a NASA engineer, who has been making guitars and tools for guitar makers for more than thirty years. Another contributor was the lower back difficulties, which meant that I had trouble practicing for more than 30 minutes without discomfort. Thus began my search for “the chair”. I found many ergonomic chairs on the market that are functional and commercial but not specifically for guitar players. Of course, they are less expensive but incompatible with a truly deserving, high quality guitar. The only chair that I found that complemented my Barry Daniels guitar was the Boggs Guitar chair. My wife who is skeptically supportive of my various projects, was also amazed when the chair arrived. The Chair, the Guitar and myself have now all moved from the back to the front room of the house and when I am not playing, my wife is proudly showing the chair to her friends, as if it is hers. I must occasionally remind her that this was not her idea. Most importantly, I have now been playing on the chair for a couple of months and it is as comfortable as it is beautiful. Perfect in every way for serious guitar players. "
Bill Walker
Sonus Guitar Chair
"I began my search for a proper musicians chair years ago when back pain would cause me to stop practicing my guitar. I’ve used piano benches, drum thrones with “back support” and other poorly built metal chairs claiming to be made specifically for guitarists. None of them worked. I discovered the Sonus Musician’s Chair and watched the video of Brian Boggs describing the chair and knew someone finally listened to the needs of musicians. I received my chair and learned the video doesn’t do the chair justice, THIS CHAIR IS BEAUTIFUL. I began practicing and learned it was not love at first sitting. I had been using a foot stool and sitting improperly for so long I had gotten used to it. The chair is designed to help your posture. When you use a footstool with this chair you are setting your spine up for major discomfort. I put the footstool away, ordered a large pillow and kept both feet on the ground. I played my guitar with no discomfort for the first time in years. I practice up to six hours a day (on good days) and in a very short time period I could not live without this chair. The chair is built to last a lifetime and pass on to those you leave behind. The cost of the chair is minimal when I think of how much time I’ll be spending using it and how comfortable I’ll be in it. The chair fulfills it’s ultimate purpose; I no longer think about my back pain while playing. THANK YOU."

"Got the chair for Christmas. I have to say that it is nothing short of spectacular. Very comfortable to sit and play in and it is a beautiful work of art to boot. My wife went gaga over it and was disappointed when I took the chair down to my music room in the basement. Thanks very much for your creation. It’s a winner."

Sunniva Collection Testimonials

"I love, love, love mine!!! Thank you so much for this amazing piece of art/furniture!!!! It is so comfortable. Thank you Brian and Melanie!!!"
Emily
Sunniva Swing
"We continue to be delighted with our lovely swing . . . It glides so effortlessly . . . floating is perhaps the better word. Additionally, it is very handsome in the garden, relaxing to look at, as well as use!"
Maureen
Sunniva Swing
"We are on the porch with family right now and the swing is front and center. It is so beautiful, and comfortable and swingable! We just love it and the story(ies) behind it and every piece of your furniture. Looking forward to our next meeting and thanking Brian for his creativity and care in crafting every furniture piece out of the studio."
Jan Chubb

"We’ve had our two Sunniva rocking chairs now for about 9 months. They are our favorite chairs because they are so incredibly comfortable, as is (no cushions)! The height is perfect, the lumbar support is ‘just right’, and they have a good balance when rocking. We have a set of cushioned chairs we had bought, but everyone prefers to sit in the Sunniva chairs because they are so much more comfortable!

The chairs sit on our outside screened porch year round and get sun on them each day. The finish and color still look like new and the recent 14 degree weather has no effect on the chairs. Thanks for designing and making such a great chair. Highly recommended!

Sunniva Rocking Chairs
"Our Sunniva chairs are elegant sculptures which cradle us in exquisite comfort. From the perfectly crafted lumbar support to the ergonomically responsive angles on the arm ends, we couldn’t ask for better. And we aren’t alone in feeling this way – every friend who has been able to “unseat” us responds with a heartfelt sigh. In our small, green home, where we prioritized choices which demonstrated beautifully crafted performance, Brian’s Sunniva chairs are a slam dunk."

"Our Sunniva chairs have definitely found their spot in our timber frame pergola, which overlooks a koi pond. After several months outside, there’s no question they will hold up to the weather, and as with all Brian’s chairs they are ergonomically perfect. We’ve already enjoyed many hours with friends sitting in solid comfort and enjoying prosecco as we watch the setting sun. Did I mention how beautiful they are?"

"We love our outdoor living spaces, and the walnut chairs and table have made them significantly more enjoyable. They look so beautifully natural in this deeply wooded setting. They are amazingly comfortable, clearly designed by somebody who understand the human body. They are also very low maintenance, weathering well, which completes the sense of relaxation they provide."

Berea Collection Testimonials

"It’s sturdy, comfortable and really beautiful!! I sit in one every day and my clients sit in one and seem to love it. The very first purchase we made from Brian but certainly not the last! We love his functional art. A real treasure."

"Ever since I saw the hickory bark on Brian’s chairs, rockers, and stools I wanted to own them. I was fortunate to be able to purchase two bar stools in early 2013 and my husband, Jeff, and I have been enjoying them ever since. They are certainly the most comfortable stools I ever sat in and they are so truly beautiful. The cherry wood is superb and is getting better every month (cherry darkens over time). Thanks Brian for your great craftsmanship!"

"One of two chairs we now have. The finesse of the detailing is an endless delight – and actually sitting in it is a very special experience. The way the back fits and supports the body (any body!) is astonishing. We’ll be saving our nickels and dimes to buy more."
Karen and Benedict Sarnaker
"Like his Ladderback chairs, Brian’s barstools have an extremely high strength-to-weight ratio, yet support you completely. Further, while seated, you connect fully with all three points, the two ladder backs, which arch very comfortably, and the perfectly-angled seat. Most barstools cause you frequently to change position or push you forward out of the seats – not these. As for their looks, the photos on the website are accurate."
Melanie
"Our second Brian Boggs chair and another pure delight. The workmanship is superb (special thanks to Stephen James Zbornik for this) and the support it provides is a constant source of delight and astonishment – how do these craftsmen make a chair which fits so many differently-sized bodies so superbly? Problems? Yes, a couple. Firstly, one of these is not enough! Everyone is competing to use it – even our dogs seem determined to get in there. Secondly, my wife wants her own. Sadly, that is a wish which is competing with our desire for a dining table and more side chairs from Brian Boggs and his colleagues. We wish Brian and Melanie many more customers – we are certain that they will be as satisfied as we are."

Berea Rocking Chair
"Nearly 20 years ago I borrowed money from my life insurance policy to buy one of Brian’s ladder-back rocking chairs. The chair was to be a Christmas present for my wife. We loved that chair so much that years later we purchased an additional six bar stools from Brian to go around our kitchen island unit. I have the great pleasure of eating dinner every night with my family on those chairs. Although those chairs have aged over the years, I still treasure them today as much as I did then. Brian has taken a traditional Appalachia ladder-back chair and redefines and reinvented the lines. So much in fact that future generations will recognize that style of chair as his namesake – The ‘Boggs’ chair."

"When we got married and set up house for ourselves, most of our furniture was what you’d call family hand-me-downs. Instead of being disappointed with our old, sometimes beat-up furniture, we soon discovered our hand-me-downs connected us back to our Kentucky family and roots, no matter how far away we lived. They made our house feel like home…like family.

Rocking chairs were an especially big part of our family when we grew up. Kids and grandkids were rocked to sleep, beans shelled, newspapers read. And our “visiting” mostly happened while leaning back, gently rocking back and forth as the important news of the moment was delivered and discussed. The right rocking chair was just as important as the right kitchen table, or sofa, or bed.

In the mid-1980’s we moved into a big old house with a keeping room right off the kitchen — the perfect spot for a pair of rocking chairs. So we decided to keep on the lookout for some beautiful rocking chairs of our own. No hurry though, we were willing to wait for just the right chairs to come along. After all, they had to fit into our family of furniture.

One weekend we were having lunch in Berea when a pair of rocking chairs on display caught our eye, and we first heard about Brian Boggs. We pretty much stumbled on Brian’s workshop, and were amazed by the art and old school craftsmanship he put into his work. The more we heard Brian talk about his process — how he used steam and pressure to mold the shape of the wood, how the parts were connected without nails — the more we knew a pair of Brian’s rocking chairs were meant for us.

We like handmade things, especially from our home state, and we loved that our rocking chairs and footstool were handcrafted in Kentucky, just for us. We always felt like the chairs were made the way they should be, using techniques and craftsmanship our own family furniture makers might have used long ago. They fit into our home seamlessly, and were our chairs of choice for reading the morning newspaper or a good book, watching TV, visiting with friends or just thinking and rocking for a while.

From our accidental discovery of Brian’s work in Berea so long ago, our rocking chairs followed us for over 25 years, from the cozy keeping room to many other places and porches. And no matter where we were, we could count on our rocking chairs to remind us of Kentucky, and family, and home. "

"My husband read an article about Brian Boggs in “Garden and Gun” magazine and immediately wanted to make an appointment to meet Brian and see his amazing work. While my husband is a “wood nut,” he is not a wood worker. But he admires people who are. When we drove to Asheville to meet Brian and Melanie, we were very impressed by his work, his story and his pure passion for his “art.” And, of course, his chairs! We absolutely love, love, love our classic ladder back chair. Recently our daughter sat to rock and feed her newborn baby in it and pronounced it “wonderful!” Truly, it will be a piece to be passed down for generations to come in our family."

"Just a note to let you know how much we are enjoying the chairs you made. They’re beautifully designed and, equally important, extremely comfortable. Like most classic designs, they fit in well with the furniture in our living room. They’re neat to have."

"We recently replaced our dining room chairs with the Classic Ladderbacks. I couldn’t be happier. They not only look elegant around the table, they actually fit our body. I didn’t know you could be comfortable in a dining chair but this design proves it. Thank you for your attention to detail."

"We have had four of your chairs in daily use in our breakfast room for about 15 years. They have withstood grandchildren and adults, morning California sun, and still are tight and comfortable. We could not be more satisfied."

"We purchased six chairs from Brian in the early ’90s and they have been a pleasure to us daily. We have always found that one can sit in them comfortably for hours after dinner and the living room couches do not offer more comfortable seating. This always amazes us and we cherish them and the many memories of long hours with friends around the table on them. They have had no special care and are as robust and solid as the day we brought them home. Even at today’s increased prices we look forward to getting more chairs to match now that we feel able to do so."
