ART DOESN’T JUST HANG ON THE WALL

Our Sonus guitar chair landed in no-man’s-land: to

Our Sonus guitar chair landed in no-man’s-land: too many orders for our shop to build, but too few for our manufacturing partner.
Bringing it home meant starting again. It also gave me the rare opportunity to revisit a chair I first designed fifteen years ago and ask what should remain, what could be improved, and what the next version needed to become.
This week’s From the Bench tells the longer story behind the Sonus guitar chair.

Most makers spend so much energy trying to be original that they never become receptive.
This essay first appeared in 2009. After decades of designing furniture and teaching others, I find my answer hasn’t changed.
Originality isn’t something we manufacture through effort. It arrives when we develop the skills, attention, and humility to attract it.
The Myth of Original Design is now on the Boggs Bench Substack.

We love this time of year. Long evenings. Open win

We love this time of year.
Long evenings. Open windows. Meals that linger long after the plates are empty.
The Sunniva Outdoor Dining Collection was designed around those moments.
Outdoor furniture often asks us to accept compromise—comfort sacrificed for durability, structure sacrificed for appearance. Brian spent years working through those tradeoffs, searching for a way to make outdoor seating feel as welcoming and supportive as the best furniture indoors.
The result was a collection built around sculpted forms, bent laminations, and carefully considered ergonomics. Every line had a purpose. Every curve was there to support the body.
Handcrafted in Asheville from old-growth Honduran mahogany sourced through Greenwood, the nonprofit Brian co-founded with indigenous sawyer cooperatives in Honduras, the collection became one of the most ambitious projects our studio ever produced.
The Sunniva collection is now retired.
But these pieces are still in service across the country, gathering friends and family around tables just as they were designed to do.
Swipe to see where some of them landed.

We love this time of year. Long evenings, open air, nowhere you have to be.
The Sunniva was designed for exactly this. Not just a place to sit outside — a place to feel held by where you are.
Some pieces arrive fully formed. This one took years.
The support structure sits behind the sitter so nothing obstructs the view. The bent laminations in the bows provide a natural buoyancy. The seat and back shaped to cradle, not just support.
Handcrafted in Asheville from old-growth Honduran mahogany — trees hand-selected at 150 to 200 years old, sourced through Greenwood, a nonprofit Brian co-founded with indigenous sawyer cooperatives in Honduras.
The Sunniva won the A’ Design Award in 2016. It is retired now. These are some of the ones that exist.
Swipe to see where they landed.

People often assume craftsmanship advances by leaving older ideas behind.
My experience has been almost the opposite.
The deeper I’ve gone into design and engineering, the more I’ve found myself returning to the lessons I learned splitting wood by hand and weaving bark seats decades ago.

The Tango Table.
Strength, balance, and movement—held in wood.
A design that still turns heads.

After four decades in the shop, Brian has learned a little about the fine art of fucking up.
This new essay isn’t really about mistakes alone. It’s about pressure, assumptions, rushed decisions, and what hard moments can teach us if we’re willing to look deeper.
It begins in the shop, but it applies far beyond it.

People often assume the value of an object lives in how much was made by hand.
After decades of designing and building furniture, I have come to believe the deeper value lies elsewhere: in judgment, intention, care, and the clarity of the mission behind the work.
That is the heart of today’s essay, The Myth of the Handmade Object.

A study in line, structure, and restraint.
The Cio Sculpted Fanback has always been about balance, strength without heaviness, movement without excess. Each element works in relation to the next, resolving into something that feels inevitable.
Built in walnut, designed to last.

This is an invitation to take a break.
From scrolling. From the news. From the noise.
Pause in art—of any kind.
In Mother Nature.
Or in whatever carries you away, even just for a minute.
Today for us, it’s four plain maple Lily bar stools with black legs. Picked up, safe, and waiting patiently while a winter storm passes. Quiet things, moving at their own pace.
