Historically, ambrosia maple is our top performer

Historically, ambrosia maple is our top performer for our Sonus guitar chair because of the love affair that guitar players have with wood. We think it also looks particularly striking as the seat for our Cio line (the Cio rocker is pictured here). Just like all of the great things in life, the story behind where this wood species gets its unique beauty from is a good one.
Ambrosia maple is a general classification for maple lumber and is used to describe a variety of maple species that have color bug trails (stripes) throughout the board. Those stripes all vary in size and color, and resemble a Tiger's stripes.
The unique grain pattern is from impregnated Ambrosia Beetles that burrow into maple trees to deposit larvae. Those beetles carry fungi on their feet into the maple wood, which serves as food for the offspring when they hatch. The residue left behind as the beetle digs into the maple tree causes discoloration and wormholes in the wood. These trails are bluish or green and give the wood a lot of character once it's finished.

One week from now, we will be setting up our booth

One week from now, we will be setting up our booth at the @westedgedesign in Santa Monica. With this being our first show in three years, we wanted to highlight our craftsmanship, innovation, and the many levels of customization we offer. Pictured here is our new Cala Table, which embodies all three pillars. We knew that we wanted to find the perfect blue stain, as it reflects the location where it will be making its debut. The blue ocean hue is particularly stunning in person because while you're interacting with the piece, the curly maple dances like the ripples of the tide. If you will be in the LA area, we hope to see you!

When I first started this journey in chairmaking i

When I first started this journey in chairmaking in 1982, I never thought that I would be receiving pictures and stories from people who are inspired by my designs via something called "the internet" four decades later. That being said, I'm thankful every single time I do.
Knowing that @oilwaterandwood built this shaving horse to be used by him and his family has filled me with gratitude for not only getting to do what I do but for helping generations to come to know the joys of furniture making. It's not easy to make a living, but now and again, the universe smiles in reassurance. Seeing Kat stretching to reach the foot bar on a shaving horse interpreted from my design makes one such moment.
Cheers to David, Sarah, and Kat for getting together in the woodshop! Happy shaving to y’all!

It's Friday the 13th, and we have 15 pieces going

It's Friday the 13th, and we have 15 pieces going out to their forever homes. If it was 13, we may have been a little spooked.
These pieces are on their way to Pennsylvania with white glove delivery by our friend Joe Potter with Red Shoe Services. He will be heading back here in a couple of weeks to pack up a 14' table for a client in Utah, as well as everything we will be bringing out to @westedgedesign in California.

We received a note from a client this morning saying that his curly cherry Sonus, which he received last month, has "increased my playing time dramatically" and would like to order another. This time he is going with a stunning ambrosia with walnut legs - one of our favorite guitar chair combinations.
