Our Sonus guitar chair landed in no-man’s-land: too many orders for our shop to build, but too few for our manufacturing partner.
Bringing it home meant starting again. It also gave me the rare opportunity to revisit a chair I first designed fifteen years ago and ask what should remain, what could be improved, and what the next version needed to become.

This essay first appeared in 2009. After decades of designing furniture and teaching others, I find my answer hasn’t changed.
Originality isn’t something we manufacture through effort. It arrives when we develop the skills, attention, and humility to attract it.

We love this time of year.
Long evenings. Open windows. Meals that linger long after the plates are empty.
The Sunniva Outdoor Dining Collection was designed around those moments.
Outdoor furniture often asks us to accept compromise—comfort sacrificed for durability, structure sacrificed for appearance. Brian spent years working through those tradeoffs, searching for a way to make outdoor seating feel as welcoming and supportive as the best furniture indoors.
The result was a collection built around sculpted forms, bent laminations, and carefully considered ergonomics. Every line had a purpose. Every curve was there to support the body.
Handcrafted in Asheville from old-growth Honduran mahogany sourced through Greenwood, the nonprofit Brian co-founded with indigenous sawyer cooperatives in Honduras, the collection became one of the most ambitious projects our studio ever produced.
The Sunniva collection is now retired.
But these pieces are still in service across the country, gathering friends and family around tables just as they were designed to do.

We love this time of year. Long evenings, open air, nowhere you have to be.
The Sunniva was designed for exactly this. Not just a place to sit outside — a place to feel held by where you are.
Some pieces arrive fully formed. This one took years.
The support structure sits behind the sitter so nothing obstructs the view. The bent laminations in the bows provide a natural buoyancy. The seat and back shaped to cradle, not just support.
Handcrafted in Asheville from old-growth Honduran mahogany — trees hand-selected at 150 to 200 years old, sourced through Greenwood, a nonprofit Brian co-founded with indigenous sawyer cooperatives in Honduras.
The Sunniva won the A’ Design Award in 2016. It is retired now. These are some of the ones that exist.
